Privacy Policy
ToneHub is a free guitar app: it matches the tone of a song to your own amp and helps you practice the song. This policy explains what information ToneHub uses, where it goes, and the choices you have. ToneHub requires an account, created with Sign in with Apple or Google, so your tones, gear and practice are saved and synced. We don't sell your data, show ads, or use third-party analytics or tracking.
By using ToneHub you agree to this policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
Summary
- Your microphone and guitar sound stay on your iPhone. Audio is processed on the device, and song clips are kept in memory only.
- Video search uses YouTube API Services. Your search words go to our server and to YouTube. Videos play in YouTube's own embedded player.
- An account is required. You sign in with Apple or Google. Your account stores your saved tones, gear, recent songs and practice so they sync and are backed up. You can delete it in the app at any time.
- Song lookups send a song's title and artist to music services (Apple Music, MusicBrainz, GetSongBPM) to find details like key and tempo.
YouTube API Services
ToneHub uses YouTube API Services to let you search for and watch YouTube videos of songs, guitar lessons and backing tracks inside the app. By using these features you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service. Google's handling of data is described in the Google Privacy Policy (www.google.com/policies/privacy).
What we send and receive
- Search words. When you search for videos, or open a feature that looks up a video for a song (Tabs, Practice, Backing tracks), the search words (usually a song title and artist) are sent to ToneHub's server, which asks the YouTube Data API (
search.listandvideos.list) for matching public videos. - What comes back is public video information only: video ID, title, channel name, thumbnail link, a short description, whether the video can be embedded, and its length.
- ToneHub does not sign you in to Google or YouTube, does not request access to your Google or YouTube account, and does not access any private YouTube data about you.
How long we keep it
- On your iPhone, search results are cached for up to 3 days so the same search doesn't have to be repeated. Video matches for a song are kept for up to 25 days. iOS can clear this cache at any time, and deleting the app removes it.
- On our server, results for a search are kept in a shared cache for up to 7 days and are then refreshed. Anything older than 30 days is deleted automatically. The cache stores the search words and the public video information above. It does not store who searched.
Playing videos
Videos play in YouTube's official embedded player (the IFrame Player API), with YouTube's branding and controls. ToneHub never downloads YouTube videos, never stores them for offline use, and never separates or changes their audio or video. The embedded player is provided by YouTube, which may set cookies or similar technology and collect information as described in the Google Privacy Policy.
Microphone and audio
- ToneHub uses the microphone or your audio interface to play your guitar through its amp models, to tune, and to listen to a song you want to match.
- All of this audio is processed on your iPhone. Your guitar sound is never recorded to a server.
- When you match a song, the clip is kept in memory only, while its result is open, so you can compare it. It is deleted when you leave that screen and is never saved to a file or uploaded.
- To recognize a song, ToneHub uses Apple's ShazamKit, which sends Apple an audio signature (not a recording) of the clip. The recognized song is added to your recent songs, which are saved to your account. See Apple's Privacy Policy.
Apple Music and MusicKit
- If you allow it, ToneHub uses Apple's MusicKit to search the Apple Music catalog, check whether you can play full songs, and play songs inside the app. iOS asks for your permission first, and you can change it any time in Settings.
- These requests go directly from your device to Apple. ToneHub does not receive your Apple ID, your listening history or your library. Apple's handling is covered by Apple's Privacy Policy.
Your account
ToneHub requires an account. You create it at the end of setup with Sign in with Apple or Google. Your account is run on Supabase, our hosting provider, and only you can read or change the data in it.
- What we store: your sign-in identifier and the email address your sign-in provider shares (Sign in with Apple can share a private relay address), plus what you keep in the app: your saved tones (song, amp settings, pedals and notes like tuning), your gear (guitar, amp, pedals and whether you use an audio interface), your recent songs, the keys you set for songs, and your practice history (time practiced per song or activity per day, drill tempos and your practice plan).
- Why: to sync this data between your devices and back it up, so it isn't lost if you change or reset your iPhone. ToneHub keeps a copy on your device and works offline; changes sync when you're back online.
- Shared tone library: if you choose a handle and publish tones, we also store the handle and the tones, songs, sections, votes, reports and blocks you create. Others see your handle and the tones you publish as public or unlisted.
- Deleting your account: in the app, go to Settings › Account › Delete account. This deletes your account and everything stored with it on our server (your tones, gear, recent songs, practice history and profile) and removes it from your device. For Sign in with Apple, ToneHub also revokes its access at Apple. You can also email support@tonehub.app to ask us to delete your account.
- Signing out removes your data from the device. It stays in your account until you delete it.
Song details and amp models
- MusicBrainz (musicbrainz.org): song searches send the search words to identify recordings.
- GetSongBPM (getsongbpm.com): a song's title and artist are sent to look up its key and tempo.
- TONE3000 (tone3000.com): if you connect a TONE3000 account under Play › More amps, you sign in on TONE3000's site, and ToneHub uses that sign-in only to list and download amp models you choose. Your TONE3000 password never passes through ToneHub. TONE3000's own privacy policy applies to that account.
These lookups don't include your name, email or account details.
Information our server handles to prevent abuse
To keep the shared YouTube search fair and within YouTube's limits, ToneHub's server counts requests per network address and per installation of the app. The app sends a random installation ID that isn't linked to you or your account. The server stores only a one-way hash of the network address and of that ID, keeps the counts for up to 2 days, and uses them for rate limiting only. Like most web services, our hosting provider may also keep standard request logs for a short time for security.
Data stored on your device
ToneHub keeps your settings and caches (such as search results) on your iPhone, along with a working copy of your saved tones, gear, recent songs and practice so the app works offline. Deleting the app removes the copy on your device; your account keeps the synced data until you delete your account.
Sharing
We share information only with the services described above, as needed to provide the feature you use, or when required by law. We do not sell or rent personal information, and we don't allow third parties to serve ads in ToneHub.
Children
ToneHub is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them.
